MODEL YEAR DATES: August
1921 to September 1922.
BODY TYPES: Touring,
Runabout, Sedan, Coupe, Chassis and Truck chassis.
MAJOR MODEL YEAR FEATURES:New
body construction on touring cars (introduced in 1921
models). Rear section is now three pieces with quarter
panels integral with the side panels. Seats were lower;
the top irons now extended through the quarter panel
(instead of the ?L? iron previously used). Instrument
panel was supplied on all cars. A blanking plate was
used to cover the hole where the ammeter would be, on
the non-electric models.
Centerdoor sedans had solid roof panel, latch-type
window lifts, and metal over the door and window posts
instead of the painted wood seen before. The Coupe was
modified to now have the latch-type window raisers. In
addition, the previously exposed window and door sills
were now covered with metal, as on the Sedan.
FORDOR SEDAN: Introduced in December 1922, the
all-new four door sedan had an aluminum body. No cowl
vent on the early models, the low radiator. This was a
?1923? model, as were the Touring and Runabouts built
after September 1922.
The engine casting was modified in November 1921 to
use the one-piece valve door, and by April 1922, all
engines were of the new type.
COLORS: All
cars were painted black, with black fenders.
UPHOLSTERY: Imitation
leather in the open cars. The pattern was a stitched
vertical pleat design on both seat bottoms and backs.
Closed car upholstery was gray cloth with a lined
pattern but was changed to a brown color during the
year.
FENDERS: Unchanged
since 1917.
SPLASH APRON: Unchanged
since 1917.
RUNNING BOARDS: Unchanged
since 1914 except that the diamonds were not as sharp,
probably due to wear on the dies that pressed them.
HOOD: Steel.
Hold-down clamps had two ?ears? and were made of pressed
steel. Handles were pressed steel but were now made in
such a way that they could be fastened to the hood
without a separate rivet. (A ?hole? appears where the
rivet was.)
DASHBOARD (Firewall):
Wood, fitted outside the front cowl, hidden by the metal
cowl weather strip.
CHASSIS: Same
as 1921. Painted black.
STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY: Pressed
steel, black painted, quadrant, Zinc-plated spark and
throttle levers, with flattened metal ends. Gear case
was brass but zinc plated, one piece assembly. Wheel was
16? outside diameter, made of ?Fordite? (synthetic
material), and painted black. The wheel spider was now
pressed steel and painted black. Horn button no longer
the combination light/horn type since all cars now had
the light switch on the instrument panel.
FRONT AXLE: Same
as the 1921 cars. A new ?one-piece? spindle was used for
a short time (February to May) then discontinued.
REAR AXLE: Same
as 1921.
DRIVESHAFT HOUSING: Same
as 1921.
REAR RADIUS AND BRAKE RODS: Radius
rods now were of seamed construction, requiring a right
and left side (the seam must face down to allow water to
leak out).
WHEELS: Used
30 by 3 tires in front; 30 by 3-1/2 in the rear. Front
wheels used taper-roller (Timken) bearings except in the
non-starter, non-demountable open cars. Hub caps were
the same as the redesigned 1921 type. Demountable-rim
wheels were standard on closed cars, and optional on the
open models; used 30 by 3-1/2 tires all around.
SPRINGS: Non-tapered,
front and rear. ?L? shaped shackles of the forged type.
Oilers were pressed into the springs.
RADIATOR: Same
as that used since 1919.
ENGINE: Same
as 1920. In November 1921 the valve chambers were
altered and the engine now had one long cover plate
instead of the two used since 1911. Starter was still
optional on the open cars.
ENGINE PAN: Unchanged
from 1921.
OIL FILLER CAP: The
mushroom-shaped cap, made of steel, with three flutes.
ENGINE CRANK: The
plain steel sleeve type as used since 1914 was replaced
with the one piece type with the rolled-in-place sheet
metal handle sleeve.
ENGINE FAN: Same
as 1920.
MANIFOLDS: Unchanged
from previous years.
CARBURETORS: Kingston
Model L4, Holley Model NH, or Ford F.
CARBURETOR STOVE: Sheet
metal type which rose vertically at the rear of the
carburetor and mated with the exhaust manifold at the
rear corner, being held by the rear manifold retaining
stud/nut.
MUFFLER: Pressed
steel type with no tail pipe.
FUEL TANK: Elliptical,
under the front seat. Mounting brackets clamped to the
tank. Outlet was between the center and the right side,
between the frame rails. The Sedan continued the square
tank under the driver?s seat. The Coupe used the sedan
tank located in the turtle deck.
TRANSMISSION: Three
pedal standard-design. Pedals were of the plain type.
Transmission cover was cast iron, and modified to accept
the starter. Tapered inspection door, held with six
screws. The door was of pressed steel with an embossed
pattern.
COIL BOX ASSEMBLY: Ford,
same as used in 1920, but no longer had the ignition
switch on the box. The switch was on the instrument
panel on all cars.
LAMPS: Magneto
powered electric type on the non-starter cars, and six
volt electric on the starter models. Black steel rims,
with Ford ?H? lens. Side and tail lamps were similar to
1917 on the non-starter cars. Starter cars had a small
electric tail light and did not have side lights.
HORN: Magneto
powered electric on non-starter cars, but six volt
vibrator type on starter models, new this year.
WINDSHIELD: Upright,
with top section that folded to the rear. Frame was
bolted to the brackets. Painted black. Unchanged from
1921.
TOP: (Open
cars). Top color was black on all open cars. Unchanged
from 1921.
SPEEDOMETER: Not
standard equipment.
TURTLE DECK (on
Runabout): Similar in style to the 1921. Handles were
pressed steel and painted black.

T8644A battery bracket clamp to be used instead
of T8844B on all T chassis. (older supersedes
the newer!) T8844B is used with the steel
battery box only and cannot be used with the
wooden one.
T6576H headlamp lens specified for T and TT with
starter. T6511H headlight assembly with above
lens, with T6572H1 (Ford design) or T6572 (Tulite)
bulbs estimated for production for February 1.
Green-visor type is being used.
T7432
rear seat trim rail filler wedge (two used) for
1921-22 Touring body. "The above part is to be
of wood and is to be nailed to the rear seat
trim rail directly over the rear seat pillar
trim strip in order to fill opening caused by
offset between trim strip and trim rail."

supplied by outside firms) announced. These are
the seamed type and must be installed with the
seam down, therefore requiring left and right
types.
T8792A3 starter switch, Ford design, announced.
This replaced the T8733 switch assembly which
was supplied with the T8793 extension. The new
switch did not include the extension, which must
now be ordered separately. The new switch
eliminated the need for T8780 bracket, T7166
bolt, T1565 washer, and T1309 nut.
T8824
spare rim bracket, right. Made of T8790
reinforcement and T8775 bracket. Replaced T8775
bracket assembly. Left bracket is T8825,
consisting of T8791 reinforcement and T8776
bracket . T8837C is the new assembly complete.
T7364
rear lamp bracket reinforcement. Used on Touring
bodies with non-demountable wheels. "To be
placed on rear end sill inside of body before
inserting T8109 bolts which are used in
assembling the lamp bracket to the body."

brush holder assembly must be replaced if this
stud is to be replaced.
T5014D (8697) starter switch cover and plunger
assembly obsoleted and replaced with T5014E
(8698). Use T5015 (8793) plunger extension on
all cars except the sedan.

REFINEMENTS ADDED TO FORD ENCLOSED CARS

"Many
added conveniences and refinements are to be
seen in the Ford enclosed cars now being
displayed by local authorized Ford dealers.
"The
interior of both the coupe and the sedan is now
finished in an attractive shade of walnut brown
broadcloth; and the seats are upholstered with a
similar material threaded with chalked
ebony-stripe. Heavy floor rugs give an added
touch of comfort. Lfts, of a special design,
minimize the effort of raising or lowering the
windows. Door bumpers insure a tighter fitting,
and new door grips, both inside and out, add to
the rider?s convenience.",

Factory letter to branches notes that frames
supplied by Parish and Bingham often have the
(brake) quadrant too high. Also that frames
supplied by Michigan Stamping Co. have a problem
of rivet heads breaking off. Branches are asked
to make repairs and advise the factory so that
the cost of such repairs can be billed to the
manufacturers.
Also a note on using a large wrench to bend the
spare rim carrier flange to that oil tail lamps
will be perpendicular to the ground.

Engine 6,000,000 built at 9:14 A.M. Given to
Edsel Ford.
"The
six millionth Model "T" Ford motor was produced
May 18th, in the Ford factory in Detroit. In
other words, from the time back in 1908 when the
Ford Motor Company began marketing the now
famous Model "T" Motor Car until May 18th, 1922,
a total of six million Ford cars and trucks have
been produced. Out of this total, 5,517,956 were
delivered to purchasers in the United States
alone, and according to the latest statistics,
4,478,248 of these Ford cars and trucks are
still in daily service.
"Thus, it will be seen that one out of every
five Ford cars and trucks sold to retail
purchasers in the United States alone during the
past fourteen years, four are still in actual
daily use, which is really remarkable when the
hard service of commercial cars is taken into
consideration. This seems to forcibly confirm
the popular knowledge of the longevity of Ford
cars.
"That
Ford products have been quite evenly distributed
throughout the United States is borne out by the
fact that thru the sparsely settle communities
in the West to the densely populated cities in
the East, practically the same ratio of Ford
cars and trucks to population exists.
"Ohio
leads with a total of 290,769 Ford cars and
trucks in daily use; Illinois comes second;
Pennsylvania third; Texas fourth, and Michigan
fifth, with a total of 234,081. New York, Iowa
and California follow in the order named, each
having more that 200,000.
"An
idea of the important part played by Ford cars
and trucks in the daily transportation of goods
and persons in the United States can be gained
by realization of the fact that with the Ford
cars now in operation, averaging a minimum of
5,000 miles per year each, they would pile up a
total of Twenty-five Billion transportation
miles -- equivalent to more than a million trips
around the world.
"Ford
Motor Number 6,000,000 was lifted from the
assembly line in the Highland Park Ford Plant at
9:14 A.M., May 18the.Just 5-1/3 seconds later
Number 6,000,001 was finished."

New
Fordor Sedan described. Price: $725, FOB
Detroit. Dealers asked to not advertise it and
to sell it only when the standard (centerdoor)
sedan could not be sold to a customer.
"A
new four-door, five-passenger sedan body has
been added to the line of standard Ford body
types. This body is an entirely new development
in design and construction, and does not in any
way displace the present two-door sedan, which
will continue to come thru.
"While this new four-door body will go into
production within the next several weeks, the
output will necessarily be limited for some time
to come; therefore your sales effort on the
present two-door type should be increased rather
than relaxed. This present type still represents
one of the best automobile values on the market,
and the new type of body will simply broaden the
field of sedan prospects, so far as Ford
business is concerned.
"The
price of the new four-door sedan is ($725.00)
Seven hundred and twenty-five dollars, F.O.B.
Detroit, and the differential between it and the
two-door type is large enough to prevent
competition between the two models. There is no
reason why you should lose a single sedan order
because of inability to deliver the new type,
WHICH SHOULD ONLY BE MENTIONED TO PROSPECTS WHO
HAVE PREVIOUSLY GIVEN CAREFUL CONSIDERATION TO
THE PURCHASE OF A FOUR-DOOR SEDAN, AND WILL NOT
BE SATISFIED WITH ANY OTHER TYPE. (sic)
"Continue pushing the sale of the two-door
sedan, and only accept orders for the four-door
type to prevent actual loss of business.
"VERY
LITTLE PUBLICITY ON THE NEW SEDAN IS BEING GIVEN
OUT. THEREFORE, FOR THE PRESENT, PREPARE NO
ADVERTISING COPY ON IT, AND SEND OUT NO
LITERATURE. IN THIS WAY YOUR SELLING PROBLEM
WILL BE GREATLY SIMPLIFIED.
"Attached is a description of the features of
the new four-door sedan, and a little later it
is expected that a descriptive folder with
illustrations will be ready for use."

FEATURES OF THE FOUR-DOOR SEDAN
|
"The
body is approximately three inches longer than
the two-door type Sedan, the extra length
providing additional leg room for the occupants
of the rear seat.
"All
body panels are of aluminum with embossed
molding, the metal extending up around the
window sills and runways so that there are no
wood parts exposed on the entire body. This
feature insures a uniform finish and will
largely prevent checking or other paint trouble.
"The
body though longer that the present design
weighs approximately 80 lbs. less. The saving in
weight is gained by the use of aluminum panels
in place of steel and also a lighter roof
construction.
"The
roof is of the soft type with artificial leather
reinforced and padded, making it as durable and
substantial as the old fiber board type, and
eliminating the possibility of vibration noises.
The overall height of the body is one inch less
that the present design. With the straighter
roof line the car has the appearance of greatly
increased length.
"A
permanent leather visor above the windshield
adds greatly to the appearance of the car while
protecting the driver from the glare of the sun.
"The
tire carrier is of a new and improved design
which permits the spare tire to set at an angle
that corresponds with the lines of the body.
"The
front door openings are 23-4/8 (sic) inches and
the rear door openings are the same width as on
the present two-door sedan.
"Door
handles are of the straight bar type made from
hard black rubber with nickel tips and fittings.
All doors are equipped with locks. Three of the
locks are operated by levers from the interior
of the body while the right front door is
operated by a key from the outside.
"All
doors are equipped with special Ford design
double roller dovetail guides at center as well
as rubber bumpers top and bottom to prevent
rattling.
"The
upper sash of the windshield is adjustable
either outwardly or inwardly to provide the
proper degree of ventilation. An improved design
of clamp permits it to be easily adjusted and
securely fastened in any position. The lower
section of the windshield is stationary which is
a factor in preventing rain from leaking into
the body.
"The
windows in all four doors are operated by means
of crank type window regulators, while the rear
windows are operated by the present lever type
used in the two-door Sedan.
"All
interior fittings, including window regulators,
door pull handles, door latch levers, etc., are
finished in oxidized silver.
"A
dome light is operated by a button on the right
rear body pillar.
"Upholstery material is of improved design with
a fine dark stripe on a brown background of a
shade that will not easily show dust and dirt.
Silk window curtains to harmonize are provided
for the three rear windows.
"The
rear seat cushion is 46-1/2 inches by 20 inches,
or one inch wider than in the two-door Sedan.
The front seat is 42-1/2 inches by 19 inches and
will accommodate a third person if necessary.
The front seat cushion is divided in the center
making it necessary to raise but one-half of the
cushion to fill the gasoline tank. Therefore,
the driver may have the tank filled without
leaving his seat.
"Seat
cushions are held in position by means of dowel
pins in place of the covered binding strip used
on our two-door Sedan.
"The
price of the new Sedan is $725.00 F.O.B.
Detroit."

week.

"We
have just discovered that in order to make the
door panels fit on the coupe jobs, some workmen
had conceived the idea of cutting the cardboard
on each side about 1/2" from where it was sewed
to the cloth and extending from the top to the
bottom, thus permitting the cloth to be
stretched so that the full surface of the door
and door frame would be entirely covered.
"As
soon as this was discovered we checked up and
were assured by the Briggs Manufacturing Company
that this did not extend over a period longer
than two days.
"By
feeling along the sides of the panel it can be
easily distinguished whether or not this
cardboard has been cut and wherever you find it
necessary, out suggestion is that you replace
the panel with a good one from your service
stock.
"If
the panels which you remove can be used for
service and if you have only a very few of them,
our suggestion is that you put them into your
service stock. In any event, advise us of the
number your replace, so that we can determine
whether or not they are to be charged back to
the Briggs Manufacturing Company."
The
letter does not say what to do when you get one
of these defective panels from service to
replace another defective panel on the coupe
being repaired!

Stripe was not less than 5/16" nor more than
3/8" below the belt molding, and not less than
